I used my IP address and the respective gateway in place of those given
here.

If you write "my IP address" here, do you actually mean a different address from that of your host system? In other words, the HelenOS in the guest virtual machine needs to have a dedicated IP address, different from the host machine IP address.

I tried to ping a popular website using the ping command, but it
did not work.

Can you at least ping the gateway? Can you ping the IP address of the host system? Or any other IP on your local LAN?

As with any networking issues, the root cause of the problem can be in many things, e.g. in the host system's firewall, in the gateway, etc. You might try to configure the bridged networking in a different guest OS (say Linux) to eliminate possible causes, even by using a network packet sniffer.
