Is bzr-based version control required? I'm familiar with git, so is it possible to use github for example? Or is it 'recommended' for us to use bzr?
Please stick to Bazaar. Using any other VCS makes it much harder for us to merge your code eventually, with only a limited benefits for you -- there is almost nothing git can do and Bazaar cannot (except a more intelligent cherrypicking), only the building blocks are slightly different.
If you are familiar with git, learning to use Bazaar should be a piece of cake for you. Maybe our two short texts can help you [1], [2].
