According to the manual, "$n with n zero or negative is allowed for
reference to tokens and groupings on the stack before those that
match the current rule."
So then it is still permitted - but the answer by Akim shows some
problems: it is hard to tell exactly what is on the stack, as it is
dynamically allocated.
