Based on my earlier testing wtih passing lists to parametrized methods, you may
want to more fully qualify the variables. Specifically, try sticking a "this"
in front of the variable names in the list reference:
append_user_field("$(groupindex)","4","@(this.groups[$(this.groupindex)])";
