Thanks to Adam Dunn, Ed Brown, Lionel for pointing in the right direction.
I was able to resolve this by going with "openssl-0.9.7i.tar.gz" version. Earlier i was using openssl-0.9.7d.tar.gz .
I think Adam's solution to the key problem led us to look deeper into openssl.
