Right.
./configure ...
LD_RUN_PATH=<path_to_libs> make
... does exactly what you want.
For example,
I install all third-party software that I have to build in
/usr/pkg/<software>. I symbolically link all of that stuff to
/usr/local (e.g. /usr/local/sbin/cfrun ->
/usr/pkg/cfengine/sbin/cfrun).
Most of my make steps are:
LD_RUN_PATH=/usr/local/lib make
No LD_LIBRARY_PATH needed.
