Tramp is intented to do this. If it doesn't, any support reaching this goal is very appreciated. For the time being, Tramp _IS_ very slow in initialization. There are some ideas on the todo list for improvement, but that's not so simple. After initialization, it should work with sufficient performance (although slower than ange-ftp). You mention an important fact: It did work with August Emacs 21.3.50, and it didn't with December Emacs 21.3.50. When you switched to the latter one, did you upgrade something else in parallel? Windows XP SP2, Cygwin, whatever? If not, we could concentrate on Emacs and its builtin Tramp. Best regards, Michael.
