[h-e-w] emacs client problem

installed the latest beta of emacsw32 on XP
(http://www.ourcomments.org/cgi-bin/emacsw32-dl-latest.pl).  I'm having problems
with the emacs client setup.  I'm getting warning message like:

Emacsclient ERROR
---------------------------
C:\Program Files\Emacs\emacs\bin\emacsclientw.exe: No socket or alternate
editor.  Please use:

        --server-file      (or environment variable EMACS_SERVER_FILE)
        --alternate-editor (or environment variable ALTERNATE_EDITOR)

I defined %HOME% to "My Documents" but no luck.  ideas?
