I should have said that I used the string produced by describe-font:

name (opened by):
-outline-Topaz-8-normal-normal-normal-mono-9-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1
       full name: Topaz-8-7.0
            size: 9
          height: 9
 baseline-offset: 0
relative-compose: 0

and put into .emacs :

(set-default-font
"-outline-Topaz-8-normal-normal-normal-mono-9-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1")

But when I open .emacs now I get the error:

error: Invalid font name,
-outline-Topaz-8-normal-normal-normal-mono-9-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1
