FWIW there is a very nice free and scriptable program called Fityk by Marcin Wojdyr that can do this stuff reliably. http://fityk.nieto.pl/
He's recently made his binaries pay-to-download, but the source code is still free, in Github, and the packages are still in Ubuntu.
