Why is writing required?  Is that a requirement for setting a active
translator? (That is, IIRC, what libdiskfs does).

(I always had the idea that I can set a translator on any node I own)

If it really isn't possible what is the right way to fix this?  Is
this a bug that should be mentioned in the BTS?
