Okay I made these changes.
Now, when I boot (w/o floppy), it gets this far before locking up (the
cursor stiil blinks):
Partition check (DOS partitions):
hd0: hds0s1 hd0s2
COM0: at atbus0, port = 3f8, spl = 6, pic = 4 (DOS COM1)
COM1: at atbus1, port = 2f8, spl = 6, pic = 4 (DOS COM2)

In the fstab, for me -- is this correct based on my configuration:
/dev/hd0s1 / extfs rw 1 1
^^^^^
Change that to 'ext2'.
/dev/hd2 /cdrom iso9660fs ro,noauto 0 0
That one isn't needed; use settrans instead.
/etc/fstab is only used for checking the filesystems on
Debian GNU/Hurd's boot-up, IIRC.
