It must be Friday, because I'm really confused by what you want to
do... or maybe more accurately, why you want to do it.
However, it seems to me you're going to a lot of trouble to recreate the
already-existing $(MAKELEVEL) variable; see your friendly neighborhood
GNU make user's manual...
