$ make hydrogen.req carbon.req lawrencium.req -n
It works as long as lawrencium.key already exists in the system. With your hack, the key will not be created anymore since the prerequisite is no more present in the second pattern rule.
I'll dig into this and what Lane previously proposed. I'll let you know.
