Reinier's solution is elegant and I've got it working. Thanks. I don't suppose there's any way to suppress or hide the "vars.mk: No such file or directory" message? It's correct, bu it's liable to cause confusion since (a) it looks so much like an error message and (b) it's only true for an instant so when the user looks into it they'll find the file there. Make doesn't say "foo.o: No such file or directory" before beginning to build foo.o, after all.
