Jeff, this is just my opinion, but here goes. I do not like the idea of
1/2" board for the roof. Last year my all-1" hexayurt did fine in the
winds, but the winds were not nearly as strong as the peak winds (75mph) on
the playa. When I was unloading the roof rack, one of my door panels got
blown away in light winds and broke into 5 pieces. The panels are far
stronger when part of the hexayurt structure, but I wouldn't take chances.
It matters that you get the joints tight before you tape them -- much better
wind strength.

Bi-filament tape is fine all by itself. There will inevitably be some
separation of the tape from the panels during the week there, but diligent
pressing down the tape after it's in place will prevent most of that. It
holds up well to UV (at for duration of a week) and does not dry out --
which is a problem for duct tape. Aluminum tape holds up better to UV and
heat, but doesn't have anything close to the tear (sheer) strength of the
bi-filament tape.

Sandwiching the panels between plywood for transport is good. Flammability
of the hexayurt materials, tape included, is less than wood or canvas or
nylon. You would have better flammability protection in a concrete
blockhouse though...
A fire extinguisher is a good idea for any camp at BURNING Man.

Subject: [hexayurt] questions on filament tape and 1/2" roof

Hi all, I'm in the planning stages of building hexayurt for burning
man and have been learning and having a lot of fun making small scale
models. I'm pretty excited about the yurt!

I'll be driving from Denver and most likely will be bringing the yurt
on the top of my Subaru Forester. I am planning to sandwich it with
plywood. I recently ran across some pictures of a yurt that used 1/2"
thick Tuff-R for the roof and 1" for the walls. This seemed to reduce
the volume of the yurt in "travel" mode quite a bit. Is this a
reasonable way to build it, or is 1/2" not a good idea even if just
for the roof?

Also, I'm a bit unsure re: the filament tape on the playa...do I need
to tape over it or is it fine on its own? lots of discussion about it
being very flamable.

thanks,

-Jeff
