www.turbokool.com, about $700. Runs on 12v (6A on high, 3.4A on medium),
which was my primary requirement. Does not require a generator (I live in
the AEZ where generators are verboten); I had two deep-cycle batteries and
an 80 watt PV panel. It is elegantly simple.

I had to make a few modifications.

1) I build a well-sealed plenum to get the air into the HY. The unit
sat on the plenum, which sat on the ground.

2) I had to extend the control wires by about a meter, which required a
pair of hard-to-find molex connectors.

3) I got 12v to the unit via Anderson Powerpoles on the control panel.

4) Water source was simple. A 5 gal bucket of water, gravity-fed to
the unit, was more than enough for most of a day. Keep dust out of this
water.

5) I built elaborate air filters to keep dust out of the unit, but they
weren't needed, and hindered air flow besides. The whole unit is a natural
dust filter.

Drawbacks

1) The molex connector is not found in most stores (Radio Shack, Frys).
Must be ordered from Digikey or Allied.

2) Water inlet is non-standard connector. If possible, order extra
female connectors (1 comes with unit).

Bring nut drivers to make access to servicing a little easier. It is simple
to service and adjust in the field.

Customer service is very good.

Third picture shows the unit on the plenum. The second-to-last picture
shows the control panel inside the HY. Pictures 1 and 3-7 are of the HY
generally. Picture 4 shows the exhaust fan, also from the RV world; a
powerful exhaust fan is required.

Can you tell us more about the TurboKool thing ?
Average price ? Power supply ? Did you just cut a hole in the roof and
installed it ? Looks like a good idea ( I don't feel like bringing a
generator though)

I second everything Spiral says. Last year I added a RV swamp cooler from
TurboKool that reduced the daytime temperature inside by 15 degrees. Still
no dust inside. This year I want to add Aluminet over the HY to reduce the
heat load on the structure even further.

Everything gets hot on the playa. The Hexayurt is actually pretty
reasonable compared to many other structures. The silvery outside
helps reflect away much of the light that would heat things up. They
can get stuffy. This is easily remedied. You can cut a hole in a side
and put an A/C filter over and mount an attic vent in the roof. This
will give you a good amount of air flow and not too much dust.

Thse will actually keep you cooler into the late morning than a tent
and shade structure can. On really breezy days, a tent may win
temperature-wise, but your stuff will be coated in dust.

Becareful with window placement. A misplaced window can turn a
hexayurt into a solar oven.

The last year I was on playa was 2008. I slept just about all day
sunday, including through the dust storm around temple burn. The
hexayurt barely budged during the storm and it was a temperature
comfortable for me to sleep in all day. I've never been able to sleep
past 9 - 9:30am in tents.

Cheers,
Spiral
