I would like to know sources for music suitable for a Drehleier/ Vielle a Roue. I would also like to know the best chanter strings to buy. I am getting the usual violin tone but when I tune down on the chanters the tone goes. I need heavier guage strings. I would like it to sound more like a cello when played with a single chanter. perhaps someone knows this on here which saves me hours and hours of experimentation.

maybe give hurdy-gurdy.wiki-site.com a try. It lists repertoire sources and also string recomandations. The Dominant cello strings mentioned in an earlier mail are well established as drones.

prefer the Chabenat/Loibner sound to the Bouffard/ Eaton sound if that makes sense to you although I listen to all of them and like them a lot. I would prefer to find that sound.

The difference in sound you mention is a question of the register and instrument type:

Chabenat/Loibner play flat back alto hurdy gurdies with melody strings down to viola c Bouffard/Eaton play luteback vielles with melody strings in violin range, from d''(next to violin e) to violin g (Eaton) at lowest.

plain gut strings also contributes to the Bouffard/Eaton sound.

Try modern viola strings of any brand you like, heavy ones on 34.5 cm chanters, medium or light on longer chanters. I play thomastik spirocore and vision on the chanters, dominant for the drones.

Be aware that putting cotton onto a flat wound string takes some care and extra technique not to break the wire.
