Hello Sylvain, in a nutshell: diatonic is like having only the white notes on a piano (no sharps or flats), and chromatic is having both black and white notes (a complete scale). Most hurdy-gurdies are chromatic these days. The predecessor to the hurdy-gurdy, the organistrum, was diatonic. Dave
