A small piece of schrinking tube (like the on use in electricity to isolate
connections) can solve the problem of breaking the windings...

Another reason not to use metal strings for drones is if the wound
portion of the strings runs over the sharp angle of the ear there is a
real possibility for breakage of the core, in which case the string is
shot. Gut and gut core do not have this problem and are therefore much
more durable for drones.
