Hibernate Development Team, ~ Hello, my name is Barry Hawkins. I am a member of the Debian Java Packaging project[0]. Thanks for your work on Hibernate; it has been a great tool in my current project at work. I would like to package Hibernate as part of our Java offerings for Debian. As is our policy, we like to contact the upstream development team to let them know of our intentions and establish a channel for communication. ~ The initial packaging would be for the current 2.1 production release of Hibernate, 2.1.8. Concurrent packaging for 3 would follow soon afterward. As you all know, many folks are still on 2.1 and have not made the switch to 3's new package naming, and so on. When you consider that the Debian Java team still have yet to release Tomcat 5, Hibernate 2.1 is pretty cutting edge! ;-) At any rate, that is the plan for now. ~ Whoever maintains the lib/README.txt, thanks so much! It can be such a pain to track down undocumented dependencies and their versions. ~ That is greatly helpful. ~ As some of you may know, Debian packaging requires that the library or application being packaged be buildable from source. Since Hibernate doesn't have source tarball releases per se (that I am aware of), there seem to be two options:
~ a.) Pull the source out of the distribution tarball ~ b.) Create a source tarball using the CVS repository tags.
~ It seems that to check out 2.1.8 from source the following would be sufficient, using the v2108 release tag:
$ cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/hibernate checkout -r v2108 -d hibernate_2.1.8 Hibernate2
~ If the release tags could be used reliably, this would probably be the preferred method. If I could get you guys' feedback on that, it would be much appreciated. ~ Oh, and Gavin, welcome to Atlanta, according to what I heard from the JBoss guys at an AJUG meeting a while back. :-)
