Islamic Relief Malaysia Programme Description Essential Disaster Management About the course Islamic Relief Malaysia is organizing a disaster management workshop for partners from the government, local and international NGOs active in Malaysia. Course Aim The purpose of the course is to provide comprehensive disaster management knowledge and skills to enhance the capabilities of Islamic Relief worldwide staff, partners and potential partners. Course objectives Describe the main features of natural and manmade disasters Roles and responsibilities of main International Humanitarian actors Introduce SPHERE standards & humanitarian Charter Explore different techniques, approaches and best practice for more efficient response Introduce the ethics of humanitarian aid work and the codes of conduct Who is the course for? This course is designed particularly for partners and potential local partners in Malaysia. The participants should: Have relevant experience and worked in the field of disaster emergency response. Be interested in obtaining good understanding of emergency planning and response procedures. Seek an opportunity to reflect on and review their skills and knowledge through expert input. Completing the course The course will promote the sharing of relevant technical skills and knowledge and will equip participants with adequate analytical skills through developing key understanding of disaster management procedures, needs assessment methods, principles and values, contingency planning, and adhering to agreed international standards. Learning Methodology The course will encourage participants to think creatively and will utilize contemporary adult learning methodologies including: interactive lectures, group work, classroom exercises, activities, work sheet, mapping, discussion, presentations, case studies, video show, games and brain-storming. Two days will also be allocated to practical simulation in the field. Course Details The course will be held in English The course will start Monday 16 April 2007 and finish on Friday 20 April 2007. Maximum number of participants will be 30. Participation is subject to a selection process on the following pre-defined criteria: - Knowledge; previous experience - Current responsibilities in Disaster Management - Expected availability for future response Training team consists of: -Moustafa Osman, Head of Islamic Relief Disaster Preparedness and Response Unit (DPRU). Sphere Focal Point for UK. -Khaled Khalifa, Sphere Focal Point for Malaysia and Country Director of Islamic Relief. No training fee will be charged by Islamic Relief from Local NGOs and government officials. A nominal fee of RM 999 will be charged to participants from international NGOs. Travel costs, dinners and per diem are expected to be covered by the participant's Office/ organisation. Completion certificates will be awarded at the end of the workshop.
