I can get all the files, but it seems that a property contentDate is not set. This vaule is not in the xml file itself, but it is in the metadata for the xml in the repository. How is it set?

Are you sure the search actually arrives at the repository? This sounds more like your application providing you with an old (cached) result. An easy way to check would be to restart your frontend-application and see if it does find all documents in that particular case.
