INVITITATION TO A BOOK DISCUSSION

AT MPH by SISTERS IN ISLAM

Book Aug 23 on your calendar because Sisters in Islam is coming to MPH.

Islamic Family Law and Justice for Muslim Women, edited by Hjh Nik Noriani Nik Badlishah, looks at Islamic family laws as practised in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. The book's focus is on substantive areas of discrimination in the codified provisions as well as the implementation of these laws discussed at a regional workshop organised by SIS in 2001. It looks at best practices and suggests strategies for reform, drawing on experiences from the four countries, and includes input from Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Morocco and Pakistan

The hotly debated SMS divorce issue is still fresh in our minds. The public debate brought to fore an oft-heard issue concerning Muslim women in Malaysia: the ease with which a man may divorce his wife, and the difficulties encountered by a woman who seeks a divorce.

But, if justice and fairness are indisputable objectives of Syariah, shouldn't these principles be reflected in laws regulating relations between, and the respective rights of, men and women? Can there be an equal construction of gender rights in Islamic law? These questions and more will be addressed

on:  Saturday, Aug 23, 2003

at:    4.30-5.30pm

at:    MPH MidValley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur

SIS research manager and resident scholar Hajjah Nik Noriani will talk about the main points in the book; Aida Melly Tan Mutalib will give a short presentation on her experience with the implementation of the Islamic Family Law; and the rest will be able to take part in a Question & Answer session afterwards.

This is a public event so please come and show your support for the voice of moderation in Islam in Malaysia.

We look forward to seeing you -- our friends -- at the book discussion. Please direct any inquiries to Sisters in Islam at 03-2142 6121 (Shariza or Azura).
