We process quite a few samples as well and I did them at Hopkins with a similar 
time frame for the old tissue. We did not experience the problems you are 
referencing when we pulled the cases out from storage. What is the exact type 
of artifact that you are seeing? Is it freeze/thawing artifact or is it the 
tiny holes that come from water crystals? I could send you our freezing 
technique if you like. I would also suggest using cryo vials that have rubber 
gaskets which are designed for use in  those extreme temperatures.
