Debra In order for the retina to remain attached you MUST fix in Davidsons, 10% NBF and 4% PFA are not acceptable fixatives they will cause retinal detachment. You also need to trim the eye on one edge prior to processing or it's just going to shrink up like a raisin and look like hell. We section a lot of eye samples and it can be a bit tricky. We do not collect the samples - they are received in 70% alcohol we trim one edge and process on a shorter processing cycle (around 20 minutes a station, same day processing) with 3 changes of Propar instead of xylene.
