Fortunately times have changed. The person I replaced in the late 70's early 80's had been brought in from the hospital laundry and was "trained". They were still pouring embedding molds then. She did a beautiful job at cutting and staining H&E slides and 2 or 3 specials but that was all there was to do. This world has come a lot farther than those days of the 80's and 70's. We have grown into fully capable labs that don't have to send work out to the big reference centers to have tests done. I remember a class with Lee Luna when he said "We have to excel and learn these immuno procedures or the MT's were going to take them away from us." We learned and they didn't! We may not be recognized at the level with MT's but we are slowly changing and getting there. At least now an associates is required and CEU's are required. I think that's progress. If you're looked down on in your present position move on! It's not worth it. Linda

In my opinion histologists are just as important and needed as MT. Even though there is an increase in automation in pathology the hands on of a histologists is most important. The fact that hospital still consider a lower entry job is the reason there are not more of us. It is quite frustrating.
