Rick,

I'm part of the group at Azavea working on the temporal geocoder mentioned
in the GISCafe article. We've been following the discussion on this list as
well as the work by the NYPL Labs (with whom we've been in touch) around
historical GIS. We would love to have our project complement the work being
done on OHM as much as possible so that we're not all duplicating efforts.

We've actually pushed back the end date of our project by a few months
since it seems like standards for tracking historic geospatial data are
developing so quickly. I think there are some differences in focus between
our planned temporal geocoder work and what OHM is developing, but we hope
to build something that would work with the standards OHM might create.

Here is a great article on historic geocoding from GISCafe.  I am not sure
how this affects the capabilities at Historic OpenStreetMap, maybe you who
are a bit more techincally savvy and more familiar with the OSM
