Marcus - This is a great idea, and a method that I've been tinkering with for a few months now. My test dataset has been San Francisco, because construction date information is generally (although not universally) available for buildings in SF. The logic is that if we start with building shapes from today, each with a construction date associated with it, then we can reconstruct partial versions of earlier years, leaving only previously-demolished buildings (and/or alterations) to verify and draw (in urban areas, these would become obvious as they'd show up in older time views as empty spaces between known buildings). In theory, it's a great start, and as you say, it saves a lot of work.
I've been trying to build a demo of this with SF data, but it's been more time-consuming than I imagined. I haven't been able to create a useable demo yet, because I've encountered some problems with my building outlines, as well as some unreliable construction date information. If anyone would be interested in taking the data I've collected, I'd love to share it. There should be something here that will be useful for OHM.
