Dear All, Five of us met in a Google Hangout on Tuesday & discussed what we might put forward for a Knight News Challenge proposal.
Briefly, and this is my take, we thought it sensible to focus on making the workflow of entering->visualising->accessing/extracting OHM data easier. Essentially the main thing is to make filtering on a given snapshot of time easier in each step: - Use a filtering mechanism in iD (Albin has some ideas & has discussed them with MapBox) - Use some vector tile mechanism to step beyond 2008/2009 layers on current OHM site. - Potentially extend Overpass to allow meta type predicates on OHM data. Associated with these technical activities, we would also : - Build a number of thematic datasets, to demonstrate capabilities, use cases and to provide educational material. - Work with target communities to extend knowledge, get feedback & develop datasets. Technically I would see this as step towards the time-slider notion, but by no means the whole thing. Explicitly excluded either for reasons of complexity or because there is some convenient alternative are: - Linked data. Use Albin's current ideas & wikidata. - Spatio-temporal Gazetteers. Essentially wait on NYPL work and build on that. - Full time-slider concept - Probably some others There is a Hackpad at https://hackpad.com/OpenHistoricalMap-zqcHY8EVehs. A draft of some material by me is at https://www.dropbox.com/s/se98vo3gxv7oat0/Knight%20Challenge%20JRC%201st%20draft.pdf?dl=0. At the moment it's easier to write it long & then try & shorten it. Excess material (such as longer bios, etc) should go as annexes for full description. I haven't sketched this out in full, but would envisage it having the following sections: - Summary (i.e., longer than that allowed by standard rubric. - Intro - Background (partially drafted) - OHM Road Map - Include mention of things excluded - Organisation - Details of what is to be done: - Technical - Data - Community - Project Organisation - Location - People - Associates etc. - Annexes Regards, Jerry
