You might want to take a look at the hivelock module of HiveMind Utilities
(http://hivetranse.sourceforge.net) and one of the web examples in the
distribution that includes user authentication.

Personnally, I like SecurityFilter for managing authentication of a web
application (because it is independent of the container, and that all your
authentication stuff can be deployed as part of your war). The example in
the distrib is based on SecurityFilter + hivelock.
