Chechnya Update # 3

Cold, Hungry refugees from Chechnya face shortages.

Introduction

Islamic Relief has actively been working in the area of Chechnya since
1995. A delegation has been sent into Ingushetia, from our office in
Grozny, Chechnya.Phase 1 will entail the distribution of Food Packets and
blankets and the operation of Islamic Relief's 4 mobile clinics. Islamic
Relief has allocated $100,000 for the refugees.

Update on the current situation.

Thousands of hungry refugees from Chechnya faced shortages of basic
provisions as they crowded into makeshift tent camps in the neighbouring
Russian region of Ingushetia.Over 133,000 people have fled Chechnya
carrying their possessions in shopping bags and trudging along dusty roads
or edging forward in long lines of cars.

Ingushetia with a population of 300,000 residents is the only adjacent
region that is letting people in almost without restriction."The nights are
cold and the children are starting to fall ill," Ingushetia's Prime
Minister Akhmed Malsagov said.People who cannot find tents in makeshift
camps were sheltering at bus stops and in parks.

"We need warm clothing, food and medicene," Malsagov said. "But the most
important thing is a place to rest their heads.some refugees are sheltering
under plastic sheeting.which is often blown away by the fierce winds in the
region. Malsagov said bread and water were being distributed, but with
thousands more coming across the border every day, he was unsure how long
supplies would last. Relief efforts by Western aid agencies in the region
are hampered by security concerns.

A refugee in Nazran was quoted as saying: "the whole world needs to be told
what is going on here. We watched television and know what happened in
Kosova.aid agencies came to their help.nobody is helping us here" Another
women said: "Death by bombing is all there is for us in Chechnya.and here
(Ingushetia), cold and hunger."

What can we do to help.?

1.. Remember the Chechens in our prayers.
2.. Media coverage is limited, so please spread the word.
3.. Organise fundraising drives in your Islamic Centres, M.S.A's and
communities to help.
4.. Thank-you for your help and continuous support on behalf of the
refugees!

We are urgently appealing for funds to help the victims.
