In the Name of God, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful AMC emphasizes: "Terrorism has no place in Islam" (Washington, DC, December 27) - The American Muslim Council is greatly concerned with the threat of terrorist activities endangering American lives and other innocent civilians. It categorically condemns any plans or activities of that nature by any individual or group, of any faith, and whether in the United States or abroad. AMC calls upon all American Muslims, mosques and Islamic centers to join others in exercising vigilance to safeguard the lives and rights of all Americans. It expects that all Americans will identify and report any potential threats to law enforcement agencies. In light of harassment and hate crimes targeting American Muslims following earlier terrorism scares in the 1990s, AMC continues to urge American media and government to refrain from associating terrorism with any religion or religious community. It reminds the public that after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, many Muslims were subjected to intimidating phone calls and death threats after initial suspicion mistakenly blamed Muslims for that incident. "Terrorism has no place in Islam," said AMC president Nazir Khaja. "Acts of violence by individuals must be separated from the faith of seven million Muslims in America and over a billion people worldwide."
