Malaysian opposition calls for Anwar to be granted bail

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 (AFP) - Malaysia's ousted deputy premier Anwar
Ibrahim
-- whose sodomy trial resumes Tuesday -- should be freed on bail pending

his appeal against his first conviction, a senior opposition official
urged
Monday.

Lim Kit Siang, chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), called on
the
government to withdraw all charges against Anwar and grant him bail
pending
his appeal against his conviction and jail term last April.

Anwar was jailed for six years for abusing his official powers to cover
up
allegations of sexual misconduct. His separate sodomy trial resumes
after a
break of more than two months.

If found guilty he could face another 20 years in jail.

Lim said in a statement that Anwar's "continued persecution" would not
help
national reconcilation after what he called the country's dirtiest-ever
general election campaign last November.

Anwar, sacked by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in September 1998, says
he
is the victim of a top-level political conspiracy. The government denies

the charge, and says the courts are independent.

Anwar's supporters said last week they would press on with plans for a
demonstration outside the court Tuesday despite government warnings.

Deputy Premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi late Sunday again warned against
street demonstrations, saying authorities would be on alert and take
firm
action against protestors.

"We cannot allow people to do as they like. If what they did is an
offence
then action can be taken," the state Bernama news agency quoted him as
saying.

Abdullah, who is also home minister, said the arrests this month of four

opposition figures and the printer of an opposition newspaper were not
intended as a display of strength in the absence of a vacationing
Mahathir.

A foreign magazine said the action was meant to show he had turned into
"Mr
Tough Guy" from "Mr Nice Guy".

"What I did as a minister responsible for the country's internal affairs

was not intended to show that I wished to become 'Mr Tough Guy' and am
now
capable of making decisions regarded as tough and unpopular," he said.

What was important was that laws be enforced, he said.

Among those arrested on charges of sedition or revealing state secrets
was
one of Anwar's leading lawyers, Karpal Singh.
