Anwar trial resumes amid "reformasi" shouts from
supporters
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 (AFP) - Amid shouts of
"Reformasi" (reform) from hundreds of Anwar Ibrahim
supporters, the sodomy trial of Malaysia's former
deputy premier resumed here Tuesday after a break of
more than two months.
Some 20 supporters, shouting "Long Live Anwar" and
"Down with Mahathir," gathered outside the High Court
in the city centre as Anwar arrived from jail, waving
and smiling.
About 200 others assembled outside the Magistrates'
Court, 100 metres away, where eight Anwar supporters
appeared separately on charges connected to a
pro-Anwar demonstration last September.
The government has promised firm action against any
illegal protests. Three vanloads of police with dogs
were parked near the High Court but did not intervene
and the small group dispersed peacefully.
The larger group of protesters, singing patriotic
songs and shouting slogans against Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad, marched from the Magistrates' Court
to a nearby legal aid centre after the case against
the eight was adjourned for one day.
Anwar's former aide Mohamad Ezam Mohamad Nor was among
the eight.
He urged the crowd at the legal aid centre to march
back to the High Court "to wish Anwar a happy Hari
Raya" (Muslim festival).
Ezam, youth chief of the National Justice Party
founded by Anwar's wife, was arrested and charged this
month under the Official Secrets Act with possession
of classified documents.
He was one of five opposition figures arrested and
bailed pending trial in a widely criticised operation.
