South Pole project under scrutiny
By Jacqueline Ann Surin

KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry will begin an immediate
investigation into allegations that a team of Malaysians never made a
millennium jump at the South Pole earlier this month.

Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said he would look into the
allegations seriously.

"If it involves something they did not do, then it is fraud and will
affect
the name and credibility of our country.

"I will not hesitate to look into the matter from a criminal point of
view," he said yesterday at his Hari Raya open house in Ampang Jaya.

However, he said the ministry would be very careful to ensure that all
allegations were backed up by facts and evidence.

"I urge all those involved in the matter to come forward so that I can
get
all sides of the story. I hope all involved will be honest so that we
can
clear the air," he said.

"But for now, let us not speculate or make any assumptions," he added.

Hishammuddin was commenting on a press report yesterday saying members
of a
splinter group of the original Malaysian South Pole Millennium Jump team

had lodged a police report against jump organiser Fikiran Syndicate,
claiming that Malaysians in both teams had not made any jump near the
Geographical South Pole as announced.

Group spokesman Dr M. Kamaruddin M. Isa claimed press reports quoting
Fikiran Syndicate as saying that a team of Malaysian skydivers had led a

field of international parachutists in a successful jump from an
altitude
of 6,400m at the South Pole on Jan 13 were untrue.

Dr Kamaruddin was reported to have said in his police report that other
than a jump from Patriot Hills on Jan 1, there was no other jump made by

the Malaysian team.

(Patriot Hills is the Chilean airport base about 1,800km from the South
Pole.)

When contacted in Los Angeles, Fikiran Syndicate's Millennium Jump 2000
organising chairman Siva Kumar G. said the announcement saying that the
Malaysian team had made a second jump at the South Pole was made based
on a
report by the 45th Russian Antarctic Expedition, which was the organiser
of
the main expedition.

"Malaysians should be proud of this achievement. There is no room for
personal interest," he said in a phone interview yesterday.

Asked if Fikiran Syndicate would be able to provide evidence that the
second jump was made, he said:

"It is beyond my hands. I am not the organiser of the main expedition.

"The Malaysian team was just piggy-backing on the Russian expedition
together with the American Millennium Expedition. We were at their
mercy,"
he said.

"I hope I will not be forced to tell the whole story because we are
representing the country overseas, and have very clear objectives."

He said the five-member team would be returning to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow

from Los Angeles.

Siva Kumar said he would be submitting a full report to the ministry.

Minister to look into no-pole-jump report

KUALA LUMPUR, Sun - Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Tun
Hussein today said he would look into a newspaper report that had
members
of a splinter group of the original Malaysian South Pole Millennium Jump

saying no jump took place near the Geographical South Pole, as reported
by
the Press.

"This is news to me and I will look into the matter. I will not
compromise
on matters that involve the country's name," he said.

Speaking to reporters at his Hari Raya open house, he said he would make

sure there was enough evidence to support any allegation of wrongdoing.

Hishammuddin said any person or association who represented the country
had
to uphold the integrity of the country and called on anyone who had
information on the matter to provide details.

"I have no qualms about looking into it even from the criminal aspect.
There have been cases before when sports had been used by certain people

for their own ends."

The Sunday Mail today said members of the splinter group lodged a police

report at the Dang Wangi police station here claiming that Malaysians in

both teams did not make any jump near the Geographical South Pole.

A team member from the splinter group, Dr M. Kamaruddin M. Isa, said the

Jan 15 report in the Malay Mail quoting Millennium Jump 2000 organiser
Fikiran Syndicate was not true.

The newspaper report, which quoted a press release from Fikiran
Syndicate,
stated that the Millennium Jump 2000 team finally jumped at the
Geographical South Pole at 2.30am on Jan 14.

"This is not true. Other than the jump from Patriot Hills on Jan 1,
there
was no other jump made by the Malaysian team," Dr Kamaruddin said in his

police report.
