The king, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, accused "certain parties" of resorting to actions against Islamic teachings -- causing splits among Muslims and disharmony in the country. In the election the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) more than tripled its parliamentary seats to 27 to become the leading opposition party, eroding support for the ruling United Malays National Organisation. The king's speech to open parliament traditionally closely reflects government policy, analysts said. "Do not take to abusing knowledge, deviating religious teachings, spreading hate, slander, lies and other despicable acts prohibited by Islam just for the sake of personal and group interest," the king told MPs, according to the state Bernama news agency. "I hope the people will not be influenced by such repulsive and despicable acts." The king said the spreading of sacrilegious fatwas (decrees) which deviated from Islamic principles and the misuse of mosques was despicable and should be stopped immediately. "Therefore I call upon all parties to be more responsible to preserve Islam's sanctity and the integrity of its followers," he said, without identifying any culprits. Last week a minister threatened legal action against PAS, accusing it of issuing religious decrees promising heaven for its supporters and hell for opponents. The party denied the charge. "The government in the new millennium will continue to expand all of such activities like Islamic financial system, dakwah (preaching), health and education facilities," the king said. He said the government would improve understanding of Islam among the international community and contribute to unity and progress among Muslims. The opposition Democratic Action Party has predicted the government will adopt a more Islamic agenda to counter the rise of PAS, but ministers deny this.
