Witnesses paid to fabricate lies against Anwar, court told

A ruling party member testified at the sodomy trial of Anwar Ibrahim
yesterday that the prosecution's two key witnesses had been "paid off" to
fabricate sex lies against the former deputy premier.
Raja Kamarudin Raja Abdul Wahid, who first took the stand on Friday, is
the first defence witness to corroborate Anwar's claims that a political
conspiracy to ruin him was behind the corruption and sex charges.
Mr Raja Kamarudin told the court that Aziz Shamsuddin, Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad's political secretary in 1998 and now Deputy Education
Minister, had summoned him to the Prime Minister's Department to
orchestrate the political assassination of Anwar.
Mr Raja Kamarudin said Mr Aziz told him he had paid Ummi Hafilda Ali and
Azizan Abu Bakar to fabricate the sodomy allegations against him. He did
not say how much money changed hands, but that Ms Ummi was badly in need
of cash.
Ms Ummi, an advertising executive, testified during Anwar's corruption
trial that out of duty to the nation, she wrote a letter to Dr Mahathir in
1998 alleging that Anwar committed adultery with the wife of her brother,
who was Anwar's secretary at the time.
Much of the prosecution case hinges on her testimony and credibility since
she also encouraged Mr Azizan, a former driver in Anwar's household, to
write a declaration that Anwar repeatedly sodomised him.
The sodomy charge against Anwar alleges that he and his adopted brother
forced Mr Azizan to have sex between January and March 1993.
Anwar is already serving a six-year jail term for corruption. He faces
another 20 years if found guilty of sodomy.
Mr Raja Kamarudin said he had asked Mr Aziz during a meeting in June 1998
if there was any way to topple Anwar other than by smearing him with
allegations of sexual misconduct.
"He [Mr Aziz] replied: 'Adultery, sodomy and buggering are the best. Other
stories won't create as much impact. There would not be any thrill
otherwise'."
Mr Raja Kamarudin said his job was to co-ordinate a propaganda team to
spread the sodomy lies nationwide, especially in rural areas where Anwar
is popular.
Mr Raja Kamarudin said he was later taken to an office of Mr Aziz's aide,
Rais Zaharuddin.
"He [the aide] said: 'If you can, add on to the stories. Do as much as you
can so long as you damage his image. Also spread the story that Anwar is a
CIA agent'."
High Court judge Ariffin Jaka several times questioned the credibility of
the witness.
"You better call the witnesses who are really involved in the conspiracy,"
he said.
Defence lawyer Gurbachan Singh replied: "It is not very easy to get those
people."
The case continues.
