>From The Singapore Straits Times 6th March 2000 551m stadium now a white elephant Sports groups are shying away from the National Sports Complex, site of the Commonwealth Games, because of rental costs and hidden charges KUALA LUMPUR -- High rental costs and poor maintenance have turned Malaysia's RM1.2 bilion (S$551 million) national sports complex into a white elephant. Local sports groups are shying away from the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, south of Kuala Lumpur, because rental costs and hidden charges make the venue too expensive, the Sun newspaper reported. Groups must pay extra to use the electronic scoreboard, and electricity and water at the complex, the site of the Commonwealth Games two years ago. The government spends RM 1.7 million a month to maintain the complex, which comprises three stadiums, field hockey grounds, as well as centres for squash, aquatics and lawn bowling, but only a fraction is recouped from rental charges. "On paper, if you are organising a five-day tournament with 10 matches, it should cost no more than RM2,000. But be prepared to allocate RM10,000. You won't know what you are in for," an athletics source was quoted as saying. Except for the occasional tournament, product launch or pop concert, it hardly draws any attention. Even the exemption of sales tax has not helped much. Except for organisers of fairs and sales, there is little demand for use of its facilities for sports. Complex manager Merdeka Stadium Corp is now caught in a bind since the poor demand meant revenues were far below expectations, and it cannot meet its maintenance costs. Ms Kay Faezah Mohamed, executive vice-president of the company that maintains the complex, Daya Communications, described it as a "mess". "There are several defects that still need to be rectified. There are leaking roofs, rusting pillars, faulty scoreboards, burst pipes and a blocked severage system," she said. Before the complex was built, the Merdeka Stadium was the venue for all international football snatches and athletics meets. Organisers still plump for this venue. "For international meets, there is no problem with money, especially with television rights and sponsorship. But when it comes to domestic tournaments, there's hardly anything substantial," argues a source close to the Malaysian Hockey Federation. -- AFP http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg **************From Uncle Yap************** The Malaysian News & Discussion Group ===================================== Read or subscribe to this group at http://www.eGroups.com/list/beritamalaysia/ To subscribe by e-mail, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe by e-mail, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Just The Malaysian News ======================= To subscribe:just send blank e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Once registered and subscribed, you will get the daily articles about Malaysia delivered to your e-mail box ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Luck o' the Irish!
