"The truth is, there is no other place left to seek mercy when we cannot expect justice from the national institutions meant to protect our rights," 19-year-old Ms Nurul Izzah Anwar told the 53-member Commission on Wednesday evening. "Tiada lagi tempat untuk mengadu apabila institusi perlembagaan negara yg sepat utnya melindungi rakyat tidak dapat diharapkan ..." "The injustices perpetrated in Malaysia have turned us into human rights activists because we cannot ignore what is happening to our beloved country," an emotional Ms Anwar added. She said her father was a political prisoner and that "his prosecution (under the penal code) is a means of political persecution". At the end of her presentation, Ms Anwar, who took the floor to speak on behalf of the Bangkok-based Asian Cultural Forum for Development, also circulated a message from her father from Sungai Buloh prison. "As a victim of gross injustice, including physical assault at the hands of Malaysia's police chief, I appeal to the Commission to step up its work against human rights violations in my country and everywhere else," Anwar said in his message to the Commission. "When we declared our independence and sovereignty more than 40 years ago, we affirmed our commitment to the principles of liberty and justice. However, we have since seen our country regress into a police state and arrogant authoritarianism," he added. Meanwhile, a joint report by four influential legal organisations released on Wednesday concluded that in the vast majority of cases that appeared before the courts, there was no complaint about the independence of the judiciary. But it stressed that in cases, however, which were considered of political or economic importance to the executive, there were serious concerns that the judiciary was not independent. The report also expressed "serious concern" about the fairness of Anwar's trial and the independence and impartiality of the trial judge. It also emphasised the use of contempt proceedings against lawyers practising their profession as a serious obstacle to the ability of lawyers to render their services freely. http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg **************From Uncle Yap************** The Malaysian News & Discussion Group ===================================== Read or subscribe to this group at http://www.eGroups.com/list/beritamalaysia/ To subscribe by e-mail, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe by e-mail, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Just The Malaysian News ======================= To subscribe:just send blank e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Once registered and subscribed, you will get the daily articles about Malaysia delivered to your e-mail box ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Earn $500 by transferring your big list to eGroups.
