Blair fails on Islamophobia

Tony Blair looked on impassively as recently elected Russian President
Vladimir Putin ranted in Islamophobic terms about the alleged threat
posed
by Chechen Muslims. The Prime Minister was "back-peddling" on his
pledges
to the Muslim community that he understood the "error of associating
Islam
with terrorism" and therefore he has failed on Islamophobia, argues the
editorial in April 28 issue of The Muslim News.
"The least we expected form Tony Blair was that he would have rejected
the
phrase "Islamic terrorists" and rejected the claim by Putin that there
was
a threat to Europe from the European Muslims. The silence of the Blair
on
this issue gives credence to the Huntington's Islamophobic theory, says
the
editorial.
It is clear Putin was playing on the West's perceived fear of "Islamic
threat", continues the paper. "He knew it would resonate in the West in
the
same way that Milosevic succeeded in ethnically cleansing of Muslims in
Bosnia. He also used terms like "Islamic terrorists" and told the West
that
Serbia was doing a favour to the Christian world. The West stood by as
Serbia massacred Bosnian Muslims and raped Muslim women in their
thousands.
Now the West has watched as Russia has razed most of the Chechen cities
and
towns to ground and massacred its populace."
Tony Blair should have sent a clear message to Putin that Britain would
not
tolerate human rights abuses in Chechnya and on Russian Muslims and that
he
should not stir up hatred between European Muslims and Christians, says
The
Muslim News.
"We hope Prime Minister will not tolerate false accusations against
British citizens accused of terrorism" as alleged by Putin and would
reject
such accusations. "Would he have tolerated Putin's remarks if he had
said
the same about Jews?" the editorial asks.
