Maskhadov's wife and daughter arrive in Malaysia from Turkey

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (AFP) -

The wife and daughter of beleaguered Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov
arrived in Malaysia early Sunday from Turkey, an airport official said.

"Kussama Maskhadov and Fatima (Maskhadov) arrived on a Malaysian
Airlines plane from Istanbul at 7.30 a.m. (1130 GMT)," an airport
official told AFP.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was quoted by the official Bernama news
agency as saying that Malaysia would welcome anyone into the country on
humanitarian grounds and as long as they have good intentions.

"If they want to come, whether to seek asylum or continue with their
lives as they cannot do that there (in their countries) and some
children want to receive education here, we will accept them all,"
Mahathir was reported as saying.

"This is a humanitarian move, no politics in it.

"Malaysia has always practised an open-door policy for anyone who wants
to visit this country, as long as it is with good intentions."

The Malaysian airport official also said the two arrived with a man,
identified as Said Bersanov.

"Their return flight to Istanbul is on May 16 on Malaysian Airlines
aircraft Flight MH 30," the official said.

Maskhadov's son Anzor, who fought against Russia in the 1994-1996
Chechen war, lives in Malaysia.

Bernama quoted Anzor as saying: "Yes, she (Kussama) is here. She is
staying with me."

Anzor said his mother flew in from Istanbul with his 15-year-old sister,
Fatima, and they were staying at his apartment.

"The visit has got nothing to do with politics," he said, adding that
they came to visit his family.

"She (Kussama) came here to see my children and myself. My mother and
sister will go back (home) after the visit," he said.

Anzor said his mother still lives in Chechnya "but sometimes had to move
around due to the difficult circumstances there."

Asked about the fate of his father, he said the Chechen president was
"fine now" and that his father "will not leave his country and let his
people struggle against the Russian forces alone."

"He is never going to leave Chechnya because the Russians are killing
the people everyday," Anzor said.

He said despite the difficult situation in Chechnya he is still able to
"maintain a decent line of communication with his father."

A Malaysian foreign ministry official said they were not aware of their
arrival in Malaysia.

"Chechnya has no embassy in Malaysia," an official said.

Russia considers Maskhadov, who is in hiding in southeastern Chechnya, a
criminal and has opened criminal proceedings against him for leading the
last seven months of "armed rebellion."

The Kremlin does not recognise Maskhadov's presidency of the breakaway
Caucasian republic, despite his election in 1997 in polls deemed fair by
the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
