MAY 18, 2000 Angry teachers: Govt asks why
Mahathir wants to know why they are angry with his
administration and what their problems are
IPOH -- Malaysian teachers are angry with the government --
and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad wants to know why.
The government will hold talks with teachers to get to know
their problems and why they are angry, Prime Minister Datuk
Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.
"We have to communicate with these teachers to know what
their problems are and why they are willing to put the
future of our children at stake because they are angry with
something," he said after launching the national-level
Teachers' Day celebration on Tuesday.
Asked whether the government would hold dialogues with
teachers in every district to correct their negative
perception, Dr Mahathir said: "We will try to be in contact
with as many teachers as possible."
The Prime Minister said the government wanted teachers to be
professional in carrying out their duties regardless of
their personal problems or interest as this would produce a
good generation in future.
He also said the government did not want to take too much
disciplinary action against teachers unless they did
something really bad.
He said teachers in the country had been treated very well
by the government but there were instigators among
politicians who instilled bad values among the educators.
He said the politicians did it so they would benefit
politically in future as students would support them when
