PAS plans biggest gathering

ALOR STAR: PAS is planning its biggest public
gathering with an anticipated turnout of 200,000
people as the finale of its four-day PAS muktamar
(general assembly) to be held in Terengganu. Party
secretary-general Nasharuddin Mat Isa said the huge
gathering would be held at Stadium Darul Iman in Kuala
Terengganu on June 3. Nasharuddin said Kelantan Mentri
Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat and his Terengganu
counterpart Ustaz Hadi Awang were scheduled to address
the gathering.
"We have taken all precautions to ensure that
everything runs smoothly,'' he said in a telephone
interview from Kuala Lumpur.
Nasharuddin said several diplomats from foreign
countries, including Iran, Singapore, Bangladesh, the
United States and France, had confirmed their
attendance at the rally.
He said the assembly, which would begin on June 1 at
the Darul Iman indoor stadium, would be officiated by
PAS president Datuk Haji Fadzil Noor.
"A special meeting will also be held the next day to
amend the PAS constitution in relation to its office
bearers,'' he added. The amendment will include a new
clause to provide for three vice-presidents instead of
two and 24 Central Working Committee members from the
original 18.
He said the PAS Youth meeting would be held on June 1
at a venue yet to be confirmed.
"The Muslimat (wanita wing) meeting will be held at
Dewan IPK simultaneously before the muktamar begins on
2 June,'' he added. Nasharuddin said there would be no
election this year as contests for the party's top
posts would be decided next year.
The muktamar will also see a new development in the
opposition party machinery.
Instead of the traditional rusila set-up, some of the
700-odd delegates are expected to be put up at the
comfortable Primula Hotel and use state government
facilities such as the stadiums.
