MUSLIMS WIN ACCOMMODATIONS IN FOUR STATES
Workers gain right to Islamic dress and Friday prayer

(WASHINGTON, DC, 7/8/1999) - Alhamdulillah, CAIR today announced the
successful resolution of several cases involving accommodation of Islamic
religious practices in the workplace.

OLD COUNTRY BUFFET
A Muslim women in Illinois was offered a new job interview and an apology
after being denied a job at an Old Country Buffet restaurant because of her
religiously-mandated head scarf. A company official told CAIR: "It is clear
that Buffets' managers mistakenly failed to fully recognize the need for a
possible reasonable religious accommodation for [the applicant's] religious
beliefs. For this unfortunate decision, I apologize." Eden Prairie, Minn.,
based Buffets, Inc. had restaurant sales of more than $850 million in 1998.

PATHMARK STORES
A Muslim teenager received an apology, back pay and a job offer after being
denied a job at a Pennsylvania Pathmark Stores also because of religiously-
mandated attire. The Muslim job applicant told CAIR that when she brought up
the subject of the head scarf in her job interview, the interviewer stated:
"Oh, they don't care, you aren't allowed to wear the 'head gear.'"

In response to a letter from CAIR, a Pathmark Stores official said the
company was "concerned with the insensitivity of [the interviewer's]
remarks" and that the interviewer was "clearly uninformed about Pathmark's
policies." Pathmark Stores, Inc. owns 132 supermarkets with $3.7 billion in
sales last year.

UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE
A female Muslim postal worker in New Jersey was allowed to wear a head scarf
after allegedly being told by a supervisor that she could not wear the
religious attire "in front of people." After being contacted by CAIR, the
company allowed the worker to wear her head scarf.

BOUND BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
A Muslim worker in Texas has been reinstated after being suspended for
attending obligatory Friday prayer services. The employee, who worked for
Bound Business Solutions in Dallas, Texas, contacted CAIR to report the
suspension. Following discussions between CAIR and officials at the
company's corporate headquarters in Chicago, Ill., the worker was allowed to
attend the prayers.
