Suhakam to monitor Judgment Day rally
Kevin Tan

MON: The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) will send
four of its commissioners to monitor the situation
during the proposed Judgment Day gathering on Aug 4 in
the vicinity of the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

"Suhakam will send four commissioners and officials to
the scene as observers," said Suhakam chief Musa Hitam
at a press conference today.

However, he declined to name the commissioners.

In conjunction with sacked deputy prime minister Anwar
Ibrahim's sodomy trial decision scheduled to be handed
down this Friday, reformasi supporters and
non-governmental organisations had expressed their
intention to assemble to show their support for Anwar
(Judgment Day demonstration planned, July 19)

According to Musa, the commission "acknowledges the
public's right to peaceful assembly".

"We are in favour of peaceful assembly," he said.

In making an official statement on Suhakam's stand
regarding the proposed gathering, Musa appealed to all
sides, including to the police, to exercise restraint.

"The police should ensure that crowd control be
people-friendly and not confrontational," he said.

He also advised those attending the gathering "not to
be provocative either and refrain from any jeering,
taunting or sloganeering."

According to Musa, the commission recognises that the
Anwar's trial "evokes strong sentiments among
followers of all political parties and the public
alike."

He added that those wishing to go to the High Court to
know first hand of the verdict should be allowed to do
so.

"The case is certainly of national interest," he said.

Nevertheless, he advised those who attending to be
aware that "there could be provocations from certain
quarters that would wish to incite violence and even
rioting."

"They should thus be on the look-out for such negative
elements and frustrate them," he said.

Musa reminded all - the authorities and the public
alike - that Sukaham's own efforts to ensure the basic
human rights of peaceful assembly would be
"considerably influenced" by the event on Aug 4.

The commission's homepage was also officially launched
today. The website address is www.humanrights.com.my.
