Magistrate Muhammad Redzuan Abdullah, who sat as the coroner, said the policemen had tried to cover up the cause of Woo Boon Leong's death. "The court finds that the victim did not die due to drowning or accident as claimed by the policemen involved, in their evidence," he said. Muhammad Redzuan, who conducted an inquest to find out the cause of Woo's death, said the court not determine the actual cause but felt that the criminal actions of the four policemen and the civilian contributed to the death. He said the four policemen also violated several police regulations with the clear intention of protecting themselves from any action, The four are Chief Inspector Bakri Zainal Abidin and Lance Corporals Zolkarnain Abdullah, Ahmad Murad Arshad and Fasmurin, while the civilian is Lim Hai Theng. The court heard that the three policemen detained Woo at a video arcade here on March 30, 1995 and the four were then driven to Butterworth by Lim in his car. The three lance corporals, all detectives attached to the Butterworth district police headquarters, testified that Woo drowned in a drain in an escape attempt while being taken to Butterworth. One of their friends, however, told doctors at the Yan Hospital, near here, that the they found Woo's body near the Gurun toll plaza and believed he was an accident victim. Muhammad Redzuan said the post-mortem conducted on Woo's body showed that he did not drown as there was no water in his lungs. He said several regulations had been violated - there was no clear order from a chief to make an arrest outside their police district, no police reportwas lodged after the arrest, the three policemen were led by a civilian, and no report was lodged after Woo died. He said the three policemen and Lim had also met Bakri after the incident at a karaoke centre in the early hours of the morning, and the chief inspector had tried to protect them by saying that the case was a minor one that could be resolved, and advised them not to report the matter to anyone. Meanwhile, lawyer Simon Muralai, who was holding a watching brief for Woo's family, said the family would sue the police over the boy's death. -- BERNAMA ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ( Melanggan ?
