MUSLIMS ASKED TO CONGRATULATE ABC NEWS
"NIGHTLINE" FOR EXCELLENT HAJJ PROGRAM
Program let Muslims speak for themselves - Expressed respect for Islam

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/21/97) - On Friday, April 18, ABC News Nightline aired
an entire program devoted to the Hajj. The program centered on the
pilgrimage of an American Muslim, and was perhaps unique in its accurate,
objective and positive portrayal of Islam and Muslims. The Muslim narrator
took the viewing audience through the various stages of Hajj and presented
examples of the Ummah's rich diversity. The program concluded with a
satellite interview directly from Mecca and with Ted Koppel's personal
appeal for mutual respect.
"With so many media outlets offering only recycled stereotypes and
anti-Muslim bias, it is very encouraging to see that ABC News let Muslims
speak for themselves in a non-confrontational setting such as Hajj," said
CAIR Board Member Dr. Ihsan Bagby.

CAIR provided background materials on Hajj to ABC before the program aired.

NOTE - American Muslims have consistently rated ABC News as the most
objective television network in terms of news coverage of Islam and Muslims.
In a CAIR survey conducted after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, ABC was
rated the "most fair" media outlet. CBS News was rated "most biased." (A
Rush to Judgment, CAIR, 1995)
