NIKE APOLOGIZES TO MUSLIMS - RECALLS SHOES
Athletic footwear giant offers investigation and change in
design policy
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/24/97) - Alhamdulillah, CAIR today announced the
settlement of a 4-month dispute with NIKE, Inc. over the marketing of a shoe
with an "Air" logo resembling the Arabic word "Allah," or "God." (See

The settlement includes the following points of agreement between NIKE and
CAIR:
NIKE will offer an apology to Muslims for any unintentional offense.
NIKE agrees to recall all products within its control carrying the offensive
logo. The recalled products will have the logo obliterated before being
offered for sale in NIKE's U.S. outlet system.
NIKE will also accept returns of unsold shoes in line with standard policy.
NIKE will work with CAIR to deepen its understanding of Islamic issues.
Specifically, NIKE will identify reference materials for its designers,
schedule a discussion of Islamic imagery at a subsequent design summit,
centralize its graphic design process to ensure those familiar with Islamic
issues evaluate all graphic designs, and identify Muslim design resources
for future reference.
NIKE will interview employees participating in the design and development of
the products in question and will provide CAIR with a formal accounting of
how this issue developed.
NIKE, in consultation with CAIR, will make a goodwill donation to a
designated Islamic elementary school within the United States. (The donation
will be in the form of a basketball court/play area.)
"This successful campaign is proof that our community is growing stronger
and that individual efforts, whether as calls, letters, faxes, e-mail
messages or donations, add to this strength," said CAIR Board Chairman Omar
Ahmad.
"We thank Allah for enabling us to serve Islam and the Muslim community,"
said Ahmad. Ahmad also thanked several key figures such as Houston Rocket's
star Hakeem Olajuwan,
who contacted Nike personally about the shoes, and several officials of
Muslim countries who took action in support of the campaign. He offered
special thanks to the Arab Christian community for its help in this effort.
