CAIR hasreceived a number of messages from concerned Muslims who saw commercials for the movie in which characters are shown in Islamic prayer as the voice-over refers to "terrorists." For this reason, CAIR is asking Muslims to contact movie reviewers in local communities to make them aware of issues related to stereotyping of Islam and Muslims. (In the movie, a re-release of the 1991 film "Armor of God II," Chan is a secret agent hired to find Nazi gold. According to Miramax Films, the movie's distributor, the action "takes place largely in (and under) the Sahara Desert, as he (Jackie Chan) searches for buried treasure.") Coming as it does on the heels of "Path to Paradise," "Executive Decision," "True Lies," "Not Without My Daughter," and any number of other movies with negative portrayals of Islam and Muslims, "Operation Condor" has the potential to add to the already heavy load of anti-Muslim imagery. As Dr. Jack Shaheen, Professor of Mass Communications Emeritus at Southern Illinois University writes in his new book "Arab and Muslim Stereotyping in American Popular Culture," "There is a dangerous and cumulative effect when these repulsive screen images remain unchallenged. The Arab Muslim image parallels the image of the Jew in Nazi-inspired German movies...They, too, appear as unkempt money-grubbing caricatures who seek world domination, who worship a different God, who kill innocents, and who lust after blond virgins." "These kinds of movies fuel hatred against Muslims which can lead to discrimination and bias crimes," said CAIR Board Member Dr. Ihsan Bagby. Bagby also said that in the past, community-based actions helped film critics highlight the negative impact of similar movies. ACTIONS REQUESTED: (Remember to be calm and polite. Emotional calls are counterproductive.) Call local newspaper movie reviewers and TV film critics. Discuss Muslim concerns about "Operation Condor." The reviewers will be screening the film this week. Reviews usually come out on Friday. Ask that the review make note of any negative and/or stereotypical portrayals of Muslims or Islam. Suggest a feature story on the stereotyping of Muslims in films and popular culture. Obtain copies of Prof. Shaheen's new book for distribution to local media (especially newspaper movie reviewers), elected officials, educators, libraries, and civil rights groups. The book is available for $4.95 (price includes shipping) from Georgetown University's Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.
